Introduction

Not every EV charger installation follows the standard playbook.

When Vinodhan contacted Charging WA after purchasing a Kia EV5, he wanted a charging solution that worked with his upcoming solar system while accommodating a detached carport separated from the main home.

Rather than forcing a conventional installation, we designed a solution around the property.

The Challenge

The property presented several challenges:

Detached carport
Carport positioned higher than the house
Washed aggregate concrete between structures
Upcoming 10kW solar installation
Need for flexible charging access

A traditional trenching solution would have required cutting concrete and undertaking significant remediation work afterwards.

The Solution

Charging WA installed:

Ocular IQ Home Solar EV Charger
Solar-compatible charging controls
Universal socket-style charger
10-metre charging cable

Instead of trenching and mounting a charger in the carport, the charger was mounted to the house wall and paired with a longer charging cable.

This approach provided:

Lower installation costs
No concrete cutting
Greater flexibility
Future charging flexibility for additional vehicles
Better integration with the planned solar system

Why This Solution Worked

As Michael often says:

“Most people install for now. We install with the end in mind.”

The longer cable means the homeowner can charge regardless of parking position and potentially use the charger across multiple vehicles in the future.

The Outcome

The project was coordinated around the solar installation schedule and completed approximately three and a half weeks after approval.

The homeowner now has:

Solar-compatible EV charging
No expensive trenching works
Flexible charging access
A future-proof setup for additional EV ownership
